Sneaker culture's quiet pivot toward refined, low-effort silhouettes has picked up real momentum in 2026.
PUMA leaned into that shift this week with the Speedcat Mule, a backless reinterpretation of its motorsport-rooted classic. Launching on June 23, the shoe retains the distinctive shape of the original Speedcat while introducing a slip-on design built for daily wear. Roseanne Park, known globally as ROSÉ of BLACKPINK, fronts the campaign as the label's global ambassador.
Available in four colorways made from smooth, flexible leather, the Mule shares the same low-profile upper and rounded toe as its predecessor but separates itself with an open vamp, elastic closures, and a laceless silhouette. Ballet-inspired folded detailing completes the look. Color options run from black and burgundy to warmer coffee and cream tones. A rubber outsole keeps the build grounded. Pricing sits at $90 in the U.S., according to Kith's listing.
For PUMA, the Mule is the latest chapter in a Speedcat expansion that has also produced the Speedcat Ballet and a Wedge variant over the past year. The Speedcat is currently one of the brand's most popular styles. Kith served as an exclusive early retailer in April, featuring dancers from New York City Ballet in its editorial campaign for the shoe.
That imagery leaned hard into the grace angle, reinforcing how far the Speedcat has traveled from pit lanes.
Park's role in the broader push makes strategic sense. PUMA originally partnered with her in 2024, recognizing her standing as both a dominant force in K-pop and a style icon in her own right. Her ambassadorship is dedicated to PUMA's "Rewrite the Classics" program, which aims to bring the label's archival franchises to a younger audience. She joins a roster that has included Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, and Dua Lipa.
Since then, Park's solo profile has only grown louder. Her debut studio album Rosie, released in late 2024 on Atlantic Records, featured the Bruno Mars collaboration "APT." That track became the best-selling global single of 2025 and topped charts in multiple countries. She became the first Korean artist to win a Brit Award and Song of the Year at the MTV VMAs. Earlier in 2026, she fronted PUMA's H-Street sneaker campaign.
The Speedcat Mule blurs the line between sporty and sophisticated, positioning itself as a polished complement to both casual streetwear and sharper tailoring. Online reception has been warm but measured, with most of the conversation centered on the shoe's wearability rather than hype.
The release arrives timed for autumn 2026, suggesting PUMA sees the Mule less as a seasonal flash and more as a wardrobe staple. With the Speedcat franchise already cycling through new shapes every few months, the backless entry feels like an inevitable next step. Whether it carries the same staying power as the original remains to be seen. For now, it fits the moment.
