Something has been shifting in Pakistan's contemporary art scene lately.
Who gets shown, where they get shown, and who decides all this has quietly turned into one of the more urgent conversations among younger artists, curators, and educators working outside the country's established gallery circuit.
Sienna Creative House, a new venue in Islamabad's F-11 sector, is stepping right into that conversation. Its debut exhibition, opening September 12, brings together fifty visual artists from across the country under one clear premise.
The show runs on three words that work almost like a curatorial mission statement: Unfiltered. Unbiased. Accessible. Instead of grouping artists by region, medium, or institutional pedigree, the selection was built to show an honest cross-section of who is actually making art in Pakistan right now.
Stepping Outside the Usual Art-World Hierarchies
Pakistan's fine arts education has long revolved around a small number of major institutions, most notably the National College of Arts in Lahore and Beaconhouse National University, both of which have shaped much of the national conversation around contemporary practice for years.
Sienna's debut deliberately steps outside that hierarchy.
The fifty selected artists include MPhil scholars alongside self-taught makers, and graduates from cities rarely represented in capital exhibitions, among them Jehlum, Gujrat, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Jamshoro, Lahore, and Karachi.
The idea holding the whole exhibition together is polyphony. In music, polyphony means multiple independent voices existing at the same time, none of them subordinate to the others.
Applied to this show, it means the curators refused to force a single thesis onto the work. Instead, they let the pieces find their own connections.
Four themes ended up emerging naturally from the selection process: archival memory and material traces, seen through old family ledgers and traditional paper; the emotional weight of domestic spaces and daily commuting; the cultural texture of urban and rural streetscapes; and a fourth thread that bridges classical heritage with newer, hybrid media.
Where Old Techniques Meet New Ideas
That last thread connects to something that has defined Pakistani art internationally for decades.
Contemporary miniature painting here has never existed in isolation. It stays rooted in traditional rendering techniques while absorbing modern, personal, and collective narratives.
The works on display move from miniature painting and printmaking to photography and abstract oil, which says something about a generation that's just as comfortable with inherited technique as it is with newer forms of expression.
The exhibition is curated by Zaid Baloch, an artist and educator whose own background bridges two of those foundational institutions. He studied at the National College of Arts and later completed an MA at Beaconhouse National University, and his work has shown both nationally and internationally.
Alizay Nadeem, an Islamabad-based artist and designer and a graduate of COMSATS University, is co-curating the show, with a similarly strong record of exhibitions at home and abroad. Seher Chohan, who leads Sienna Creative House, is directing the exhibition, bringing an interdisciplinary practice that moves between art and technology.
A Different Kind of Opening
Islamabad's private gallery scene has existed in some form since at least the early 2000s. Gallery 6, for instance, has been running since 2008 and has staged more than 140 exhibitions in Pakistan and abroad.
What Sienna is doing feels different, at least in emphasis.
The city's established galleries have generally made room for emerging talent alongside more recognized names. Sienna's approach goes a step further, deliberately working around the kind of curatorial gatekeeping that tends to keep visibility concentrated within a familiar set of institutions and networks.
The opening runs from 4 pm to 8 pm on September 12 at House 79 A, Street 61, F-11/4, Islamabad. A full press kit, including high-resolution images, artist profiles, and Zaid's curatorial note, is expected early next week.
For a debut, this is a lot to take on. Fifty artists. Eight cities. One room. Whether the polyphonic idea actually holds up under that kind of weight, whether fifty distinct voices can genuinely share space without one drowning out the rest, is exactly the question this exhibition will have to answer.
That alone makes it worth walking in to find out.
