Mariska Hargitay Isn't Going Anywhere, and She Wants Christopher Meloni Back on 'SVU'

An image showcases American actress Mariska Hargitay, widely recognized for her iconic role as Captain Olivia Benson on the long-running NBC drama series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, posing in a modern indoor setting with a serious, contemplative expression. Her mid-length, warm brunette hair is styled in voluminous, soft waves with subtle caramel highlights that frame her face elegantly. She wears a sophisticated ensemble featuring a sleek, tailored black leather blazer layered over a simple, matching black top, projecting a sharp, authoritative, and professional aesthetic. The background is softly blurred, hinting at an office or studio environment with vertical architectural elements and muted lighting that keeps the visual focus entirely on her compelling presence.

NBC star opens up about hosting the 2026 Emmys, her on-screen chemistry with Meloni, and why leaving the show is the furthest thing from her mind

After more than a quarter-century inside the same fictional precinct, it takes something special to keep an actor talking about a role as if it still surprises them.

Mariska Hargitay, the 62-year-old face of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, sat down for a new cover story with Variety published today. During the wide-ranging conversation, she touched on her upcoming gig hosting the 2026 Emmy Awards, her devotion to the New York Knicks, and the deep bond she shares with Christopher Meloni. Most pointedly, she addressed whether she plans to walk away from the NBC procedural that made her a household name.

The short answer? Not a chance.

"Do I want to quit now? No. Why? I made a movie while shooting; I did a play for six weeks on hiatus. I'm hosting the Emmys. Next summer, if I don't make another movie, I'll probably do another play. And I love it! After I made my film, it was unleashed. Something got unleashed, or broken open, or freed," Hargitay told Variety.

An intimate and candid moment captures actors Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay sharing a warm laugh while walking together outdoors in a winter setting, framed against a brick building backdrop. The image showcases the enduring chemistry between Law & Order: Special Victims Unit stars Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay, who famously portrayed dynamic detective partners Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson. Taken during a promotional shoot or a joint public appearance, the photograph perfectly highlights their close, long-standing real-life friendship as they walk side-by-side against a backdrop of a brick building with evergreen trees and patches of lingering snow. Meloni, sporting his signature close-cropped hair, is dressed in a smart black overcoat layered over a grey collared shirt and a patterned red tie, looking affectionately at Hargitay with a subtle, knowing smile. Hargitay radiates joy with a wide, open-mouthed laugh, her brown hair blowing softly in the breeze, wearing a vibrant royal blue coat over a patterned blouse and layered necklaces. The genuine warmth, mutual respect, and comfortable camaraderie evident in their expressions instantly reflect why their on-screen partnership remains one of the most celebrated and beloved duos in modern television history.

That quote alone should quiet the speculation that has followed her for years. Hargitay has navigated rumors about a potential exit before, but this time her answer came with a list of creative projects that suggest the opposite of burnout. She recently completed a Broadway run in Every Brilliant Thing, her stage debut, and will host the 78th Emmy Awards live on NBC and Peacock on September 14.

NBC tapped her as the ceremony's emcee, in part, to celebrate the network's 100th anniversary, making her one of only a handful of non-comedians to fill that role in modern Emmy history.

Equally telling was what she said about Meloni. On their on-screen chemistry, she was direct: "The key of it was humor." It sounds simple, but that interplay between Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler drove the first twelve seasons of the series and turned the pair into arguably television's most beloved procedural duo.

In the selected region, American actress Mariska Hargitay stars in a sophisticated promotional portrait session for Variety Magazine, exuding dramatic old-Hollywood glamour while posing alongside a grand piano. Draped in a luxurious, voluminous black fur coat combined with a matching black turtleneck, sheer black tights, and elegant ankle-strap heels, her styling bridges modern high fashion with mid-century cinematic charm. Her wavy brunette hair falls softly over her face as she leans her head against her hand on the piano’s polished wood casing, her gaze directed straight toward the lens. The warm, moody lighting illuminates the golden hue of the piano keys and a geometric patterned backdrop curtain, altogether mirroring the classic aesthetic of her late mother, the 1950s screen icon Jayne Mansfield.

Hargitay also revealed a conversation with Julianna Margulies about her own identity beyond SVU. "I said, 'I've got to leave the show too. I don't want people to think I'm a one-trick pony.' And she goes, 'Sweetheart, that ship's sailed,'" she recalled. It landed, clearly, as affectionate rather than harsh.

The question of Meloni's future on the show looms larger now than it has in years. NBC renewed SVU for Season 28 in April, just hours after canceling Meloni's own spinoff, Law & Order: Organized Crime, after five seasons. That cancellation left Stabler without a home series for the first time since 2021.

When Deadline asked Hargitay whether Meloni could return to SVU, she responded plainly: "I hope so. That is a very heartening thing for both of us, that our relationship was so iconic culturally and that Benson and Stabler still resonates is deeply meaningful to me."

Showrunner Michele Fazekas has made her own intentions clear. "If I can get him, I definitely will," Fazekas told NBC Insider.

The image showcases actress Mariska Hargitay leaning against a grand piano adorned with intricate cherub illustrations. She is wearing an elegant black evening gown featuring a structured, short-sleeved bodice and a column skirt embellished with delicate pink and white floral embroidery. With her right arm raised to prop open the piano's lid and a joyful smile on her face, she exudes classic Hollywood glamour inside a stylishly decorated room.

"I don't want it to be a gag or a stunt, like it has to be meaningful and it has to come from these characters. There were at least two times this season where I was like, 'Hey, is he around?'" Fazekas, who became the show's first female showrunner starting with Season 27, previously served as a writer on SVU from Seasons 3 through 7, a period she described as centered on "the core partnership" between Benson and Stabler.

Scheduling remains the main obstacle. Meloni last guest-starred in the Season 27 premiere in September 2025, and his upcoming slate includes Dan Fogelman's sports drama The Land and an indie film called Chop Cheese, directed by his daughter Sophia. A packed calendar, not a lack of interest, is what has kept him away.

Season 27 saw SVU improve its viewership by more than 20 percent, a rare feat for a network drama approaching its third decade. Season 28 is set to premiere Thursday, October 8, at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. When it does, the show will cross 600 episodes, a milestone no other primetime live-action drama has reached.

Whether Meloni turns up in one episode or five, the door is open. Hargitay wants him there. Fazekas wants him there. Fans, who have shipped "Bensler" for the better part of two decades, certainly want him there. The only variable is his calendar.

And Hargitay? She plans to keep going. A movie, a play, the Emmys, and another season of the longest-running show of its kind. For someone supposedly on the verge of quitting, she's busier than ever.
