Few pop acts in 2026 carry as much simultaneous momentum and turbulence as KATSEYE.
The global girl group released Hootie Frutti on August 14 as part of their third EP, WILD. Directed by Alfred Marroquin, the music video depicts an underground Brazilian party featuring Latin-inflected beats and high-energy choreography, with the members dressed in vivid, colorful outfits.
Within hours of its premiere, the clip drew a sharp split reaction online. Critics on X accused the video of sexualizing the members, with many pointing to the young age of much of the group's fanbase as grounds for concern. One widely shared post called the creative direction something that "needs to be studied." Others praised the song as a genuine hit.
That tension is not new for KATSEYE. A YouTube essay on the sexualization of girl groups singled them out as a case study as early as September 2025. What is new is the context around this particular rollout.
Sophia Laforteza announced a temporary break due to health reasons, and Manon Bannerman has been on hiatus since February 2026 to focus on her well-being. That leaves KATSEYE operating as a quartet. Lara Raj, Daniela Avanzini, Yoonchae Jeung, and Megan Skiendiel are carrying the entire WILD promotional cycle on their own.
The four members performed Animal on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on August 12, marking the single's television debut. During the interview segment, Raj told Fallon, "We have nothing but so much love and support for Sophia and Manon." Raj also described the new EP as reflective of "maturity" and "growing up."
Some viewers, though, felt the reduced lineup lacked the usual energy, and others zeroed in on a loud backing track that appeared to overpower the live vocals.
The audience question looms largest. KATSEYE emerged from The Debut: Dream Academy, a HYBE and Geffen Records survival show that streamed on YouTube and Netflix, attracting a viewership skewing heavily toward tweens and young teens.
Yoonchae Jeung, the group's youngest member, is 18. User reviews on Album of the Year flagged the Hootie Frutti thumbnail alone as a poor look given what they described as a pre-teen target audience. Just Jared reported that the video was heavily inspired by Britney Spears' I'm a Slave 4 U, a comparison that practically invites this exact discourse.
It is worth separating two threads here. One is whether HYBE and Geffen, as corporate stewards, are pushing an aesthetic mismatched with their demonstrated audience. The other is whether the members themselves should have creative latitude as young women making music for other young women. Those are different conversations, and collapsing them into a single outrage cycle tends to flatten both.
WILD features five tracks, including Animal, and marks the group's first recording without Bannerman. Production credits span Ed Sheeran, Bang Si-hyuk, Omer Fedi, and Blake Slatkin. Commercially, the EP arrives on solid ground. Animal entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 24 and reached No. 8 on Spotify's Weekly Top Songs Global chart.
At the 2026 Grammy Awards, the group earned nominations for Best New Artist and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for Gabriela. A theatrical release of Katseye: Wild Hearts is also set for August. Their Wildworld Tour begins September 1 in Dublin and runs through November 28 in Mexico City, covering thirty-one dates across Europe and North America.
Major outlets like Rolling Stone have so far covered the Hootie Frutti release as a straightforward music drop, not a controversy. Whether the social media backlash remains a fan conversation or escalates into something that forces an industry response likely depends on how the next few days play out.
For now, KATSEYE sits at the intersection of every pressure that defines pop music in this era: label-driven creative choices, performer autonomy, audience age, and the speed at which a debut-day clip can become a cultural flashpoint.
Four members are doing the work of six. The question online is less about the math and more about the message.
