Peacock has given a straight-to-series order to a show based on Matt Dinniman's popular Dungeon Crawler Carl books. The live-action series comes from Universal Global Television and Seth MacFarlane's Fuzzy Door company.
Dinniman began self-publishing the series on Amazon in 2020, and it was a near-instant success. The series as a whole has sold over 10 million copies, with two more books planned. It now spans eight novels, all set after an apocalyptic alien invasion converts what remains of Earth into a series of deadly dungeons, where the few million human survivors are forced to compete in a sadistic galaxy-wide reality TV show called Dungeon Crawler World.
At the heart of Dungeon Crawler Carl is the titular protagonist, a Coast Guard vet caught in that sadistic game show, fighting to survive its trap-filled levels while safeguarding his ex's prize-winning show cat, Princess Donut. It's a genuinely strange premise, and that's precisely what made it explode.
Chris Yost, whose credits include The Mandalorian, is on board as writer and executive producer, while Dinniman is set as a non-writing co-executive producer. MacFarlane will serve as executive producer, alongside Fuzzy Door's Erica Huggins and Rachel Hargreaves-Heald.
Word broke only a little over two months ago that Peacock was developing a live-action adaptation, and the project has now moved directly to series. A straight-to-series order means no pilot will be produced, and Dungeon Crawler Carl will get a full season outright on the streaming service. That kind of commitment, skipping the pilot stage entirely, signals real confidence from NBC's streaming arm.
Dinniman confirmed the news himself on social media. "I'm happy to announce that our friends at Peacock have officially greenlit the Dungeon Crawler Carl television series! Me, Chris Yost, and Seth MacFarlane and his team at Fuzzy Door are all really excited to get to work," he wrote.
The eighth and most recent book in the series, A Parade of Horribles, was released just last month, on May 12, 2026, meaning the adaptation arrives at a moment when the source material is still actively growing. Beyond the novels, Vault Comics has also begun publishing its own line of Dungeon Crawler Carl comic books, expanding the property across multiple formats simultaneously.
Dinniman also confirmed that he and Yost are scheduled to appear on a dedicated Dungeon Crawler Carl panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where further details about the series are expected to surface. No production start date or premiere window has been announced.
