Superhero projects have faced mounting delays and creative resets in recent years. Mahershala Ali has now confirmed his exit from Marvel's long-gestating Blade reboot.
The two-time Oscar winner told GQ the vampire-hunter film is no longer happening with him. "If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it," Ali said. "So I have to move on, and I have moved on."
Marvel first announced Ali as the new Blade at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. Wesley Snipes originated the role in films from the late 1990s. Ali provided a voice cameo in the Eternals post-credits scene. Production never started despite multiple scripts and directors.
Bassam Tariq signed on to helm the project before exiting in 2022 over schedule shifts. Yann Demange later departed as well. Marvel pulled the film from its release calendar. Kevin Feige recently called himself a "gigantic loser and failure" for not launching it with Ali.
Ali trained for more than a year for sword work and stunts. He put those skills to use in Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. Tariq wrote and directed the original action thriller. Ali stars as a devout hitman protecting his children after his wife's death. The film features blade-wielding sequences drawn from that earlier prep.
"I don’t really want to be known for remakes," Ali explained. "I’d love to do original work that resonates with people and impacts them in unique ways." He noted the new project exists because Blade fell apart. Tariq had the space to write it and approach him again.
Fans expressed disappointment online over the lost potential. Some blamed Marvel's indecision. Others hoped for a fresh take without Ali. The actor made clear questions about the reboot now belong to the studio.
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. It opens in select theaters September 25 through Amazon MGM Studios. Ali and Tariq have framed it as creatively fulfilling work that aligns with their goals.
The exit closes one chapter for the Oscar winner known for Moonlight and Green Book. It leaves Marvel to decide the future of its daywalker character. Ali appears ready for stories that feel personal rather than franchise-driven.
