The five-time Grammy-nominated Nigerian star enlists South African collaborators JAZZWRLD and GL_CeeJay for his first solo single of 2026, arriving on the heels of a FIFA World Cup stage appearance and album 'Timeless' follow-up '5ive'

Afrobeats has rarely been louder on the global stage, and the genre's most vocal champion just turned the volume up again.

David Adedeji Adeleke, known worldwide as Davido, released I Know Who I Be on June 26. The song is his first release of 2026 and features South African artists Jazzwrld and GL_CeeJay. An accompanying music video, directed by Dammy Twitch and filmed in Nigeria, landed alongside the track on major streaming platforms. In a social media post announcing the single, Davido said, "'I Know Who I Be' is more than a song, it's a reminder that no matter where life takes you, your roots will always be your greatest strength."

Fan reaction has been swift and, in typical fashion, split down the middle. Many supporters interpreted the rollout messaging as a signal of a competitive new era in his career, while others focused on the collaboration lineup and expected sound.

On TikTok, Nigerian content creators Peller and Jarvis helped push the track's visibility by dancing to it during live streams, echoing a pattern they set with earlier Davido singles. Still, pockets of online criticism emerged around the pre-release strategy. Some fans argued that snippets circulated too long before launch, dulling the element of surprise.

The blend of Nigerian Afrobeats and South African 3-Step influences on the record highlights the increasingly collaborative direction of contemporary African music. It marks the first collaboration between Davido and Jazzwrld. Musically, the record leans into self-assurance rather than reinvention, built around themes of identity and resilience.

This release arrives after a particularly productive stretch. His fifth studio album, 5ive, amassed over 12 million streams on its first day following its April 2025 release. The project later earned a spot at No. 73 on Rolling Stone's 100 Best Albums of 2025 list. Davido's 16 simultaneous placements on the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart made him only the second act with multiple weeks of 15 or more entries.

Before unveiling the new single, Davido had revealed in May that he would be taking a short break from music, a decision that triggered speculation about his future plans. That pause proved brief. The release came shortly after his appearance on the FIFA World Cup 2026 global stage, where he wore a jacket bearing the names of kidnapped Nigerian schoolchildren in a widely discussed moment of activism.

The music video also features appearances by Nigerian artists Mayorkun, Peruzzi, and rapper Zlatan, all former associates of Davido Music Worldwide. Speculation of a new album has gained traction online after Davido and members of his inner circle changed their profile images to a crown.

Whether I Know Who I Be is a standalone single or the opening salvo of a larger project remains unclear. What is clear is that Davido, 15 years into a career that helped build an entire genre's global infrastructure, is not interested in slowing down.
