Your painting looked deep and luminous while the paint was still wet.
Two days later, half of it has gone chalky. The darks are flat, the values have collapsed, and the surface looks like two different paintings stitched together. You have not ruined it. What you are looking at has a name, and it has a fix. Several fixes, actually, each with different consequences.
This is sinking in. It is one of the most common problems in oil painting, and nearly every painter encounters it eventually. Sinking in is very common in oil painting. Even if you take preventative measures, it can still happen. The problem is that online advice tends to offer one cause and one solution, never acknowledging that your specific situation might call for something completely different.
What Actually Happens When Paint Sinks In
The short version: your paint ran out of oil where it needed oil most.
An irregular sheen on an oil painting is often linked to painting with high pigment volume concentration (PVC), which occurs when the oil in freshly applied paint "sinks" into the underlying substrate. When there is not enough binder left surrounding the pigment particles, air voids form in the paint film as it dries, creating a rougher surface texture. The rough texture, in turn, scatters more light, causing a dull matte appearance.
That is the whole physics of it. Pigment needs oil around it to look saturated. Remove the oil and you are left with dry powder catching light at random angles. The colour is still there. You just cannot see it properly.
The Five Causes, Ranked by How Often They Strike
Not every dull patch has the same origin. Identifying your cause changes which fix you should reach for.
1. Too Much Solvent
This is the single most frequent culprit, especially among painters who thin aggressively with turpentine or mineral spirits in early layers. Excessive use of solvents is one of the primary problems in oil painting. Solvents reduce oil viscosity, making it easier for oil to be absorbed by the underlying substrate. When dullness shows up in spots rather than uniformly, too much solvent is likely the culprit. This can result in an underbound paint layer, meaning that there's not enough oil content to keep the pigment adhered to the ground.
If you thinned your darks with solvent but painted your lights more thickly from the tube, you will see sinking only in the thin, solvent-heavy areas. That patchwork pattern is the signature.
2. An Absorbent or Under-Primed Ground
An over-absorbent or poorly primed surface is one cause of sinking in: priming creates a protective layer that stops paint being absorbed into the weave, and without this the oil will sink. The first preventative measure is to check which primer you're using. Many gesso formulations on the market are unfortunately very absorbent.
Student-grade acrylic gesso, applied in a single thin coat, is a frequent offender. So is raw linen or cotton with no sizing at all. If your entire canvas looks uniformly matte, the ground is probably the problem.
3. Earth Pigments and Blacks
Some pigments are simply more prone to sinking than others. The pigments that are often notorious in terms of sinking in include the darker natural earths, like Raw and Burnt Umber, as well as most blacks. Sunken-in areas appear most frequently in glazes containing transparent earth pigments like raw umber or burnt sienna. These pigments have naturally high oil absorption rates.
If only your darks went dead while the cadmiums and titanium white beside them still look fine, pigment character is your likely cause. In Golden's testing, Phthalo Green created a glossier film in all instances, even when thinned with solvent. As Phthalo Green has less oil by volume than Raw Umber, this is clearly a function of pigment particle size more than anything else.
Particle size and oil absorption rate vary enormously across the pigment spectrum. Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Ivory Black, and Mars Black are repeat offenders.
4. Painting Over a Matte or Dry Underlayer
As you build up oil colour in layers, the different drying rates can result in a paint film with varying degrees of absorbency, which show up as dull spots rather than a complete dull area. A dry, lean underlayer can drink the oil right out of whatever you put on top of it. This is why a second session often sinks more than the first.
5. Breaking the Fat-Over-Lean Rule
The most common cause of sinking in is painting thin layers over thick layers, or painting lean paint over fat paint. In either of these cases, the higher oil content in the underneath layers absorbs what little oil is in the top layer. If your underpainting was rich with medium and your top layers were solvent-thinned, you have created a perfect gradient for oil migration downward.
Reading the Pattern
Where sinking appears tells you a great deal about why it appeared.
When the entire canvas is uniformly matte, your ground is too absorbent. When only the darks went flat but lighter areas still glow, earth pigments or blacks are the likely cause. When dullness follows specific brushstrokes or thin passages, solvent is almost certainly to blame. And when a second or third session looks dead while the first session held up fine, the underlayer has become a sponge.
Knowing the pattern saves you from applying the wrong fix.
The Three Fixes and Their Honest Trade-Offs
Every remedy for sinking in involves giving the paint film back the refractive surface it lost. But each method does it differently, with different permanence and different risks.
Oiling Out
The oiling-out process gives the dull areas a "drink" of oil, allowing the linseed to accumulate in the porous areas of the Umbers and Blacks, thus sealing and strengthening the area. The standard method involves rubbing a very thin layer of linseed oil, or a mixture of oil and solvent, into the dead passages, then wiping off the excess.
Stand oil can help a lot with the problem, either by adding small amounts into your paint, or using it when needing to oil out a section you plan to paint back into.
The upside: it works immediately and lets you continue painting into a wet surface. The downside: if you're using linseed oil, it'll darken. The yellowing is minor if you apply sparingly, but it compounds with every oiling-out session across the painting's life. Use it between layers when you plan to keep working. Do not use it as a final cosmetic step.
Retouch Varnish
Retouch varnish is a thinner version of damar varnish that can be used as a temporary protective layer on recently finished oil paintings. It saturates the surface, brings back colour depth, and can be painted over. Retouch varnish can be applied to paint which is "hand-dry."
The upside: it is reversible, does not yellow as aggressively as raw oil, and evens out the sheen for display or photography. The downside: retouch varnishes will almost always sink in eventually, sometimes after an hour, or a day, or a week. It is a temporary measure, not a permanent solution.
Final Varnish
This is the real answer. A proper final varnish fills those air voids in the paint film permanently, giving the whole surface a unified sheen and protecting the paint beneath.
If the painting is fully cured, final varnishing should help to even out the sheen and fix any sunken-in passages. But "fully cured" is the catch. No final varnish until at least six months have passed. This is the period of time that a painting will "completely" dry, though technically an oil painting takes years to fully polymerize.
If you varnish too early, you risk trapping solvents under a sealed surface, which leads to cracking later. Patience is not optional here.
What Not to Do
Do not slather the surface with straight linseed oil and leave it sitting. Excess oil that is not absorbed will pool, yellow, and eventually crack. Do not apply final varnish to a painting that dried last week. Do not use cooking oils, ever. And do not assume that adding more medium to your paint while still painting will retroactively fix already-sunken passages beneath. Each layer needs its own solution.
Preventing Sinking In on Your Next Painting
Choose your ground deliberately. The best way to avoid sinking on oil paintings is to apply artists' primer such as oil painting primer to the surface before you start. Two or three coats of a quality acrylic gesso, sanded between coats, will dramatically reduce absorbency compared to a single thin application. An oil ground eliminates the problem almost entirely.
Build a medium ladder. Start lean, using only a small amount of solvent if any, and increase oil content with each successive layer. You're better off not using solvent at all. It's better for your paint and for you. If your paint is too viscous, just add a little linseed oil.
Know your pigments. If you are using problematic pigments that tend to sink in, like burnt umber and other earths, you can add a little bodied oil to mitigate the problem. Some painters have switched out Raw Umber and Burnt Sienna in favour of Transparent Red and Brown Oxides because they don't seem to have the same sinking issue. The synthetic iron oxides have a smaller and more consistent particle size than natural pigments, which explains the difference.
Consider pre-conditioning your surface. Preconditioning is a pre-emptive strike that prevents sinking from happening in the first place. A very thin coat of medium rubbed into a dry underlayer before your next session seals the pores without adding bulk.
I Have to Sell or Photograph It Tomorrow
This is the scenario nobody writes about, and it is the one that causes the most panic.
If you need the painting to look its best within hours, spray a light coat of retouch varnish from about twelve inches away. Two thin passes are better than one heavy one. Let each pass dry before adding the next. The surface will even out quickly and hold its sheen long enough for a photo shoot or a gallery drop-off.
Do not oil out a painting the night before a deadline. The oil takes hours to tack up, and you risk fingerprints, dust adhesion, or a surface that looks wet rather than finished.
For photography specifically, retouch varnish eliminates glare-causing sheen differences far better than oiling out does. If you are shooting under studio lights, the unified surface is what matters.
After the show or the sale, communicate to any buyer that the painting still needs its final varnish. A small note on the back with the date of completion and a six-month varnishing recommendation is standard professional practice.
Living With the Sinkers
Sinking in is not damage. It is not a flaw in your technique that marks you as a beginner. Rembrandt's paintings sank in. Vermeer used umber and knew its habits. Sinking in is a phenomenon that really all oil paintings experience during their drying phase.
What separates a frustrated painter from a confident one is not avoiding sinking entirely. It is knowing which cause you are dealing with, choosing the appropriate remedy, and understanding that the final varnish, applied at the right time, will bring everything back. Your painting is still in there. The darks are still dark. You just need to give them back what they lost.
