After last year's AI dubbing fiasco nearly torpedoed its reputation with anime fans, Amazon is back in the hot seat with a franchise that cannot afford another stumble.
The Ghost in the Shell is a new anime television series produced by Science Saru, based on the 1989 manga by Masamune Shirow. It premiered July 7, 2026, on Japanese TV and hit Prime Video globally the same day, a rare simultaneous launch for a franchise this storied. The series is available in eight dubbed languages, including English. And the English dub is already generating a very specific kind of noise online.
A Fresh Cast Steps Into Section 9
Bang Zoom! Entertainment produced the English dub, with the first two episodes debuting in UK theaters on June 26. Suzie Yeung voices Major Motoko Kusanagi, with SungWon Cho as Daisuke Aramaki, Bill Butts as Batou, and Nick Apostolides as Togusa. John Bentley takes on Ishikawa, Tony Weaver Jr. plays Saito, and Lizzie Freeman voices the Fuchikoma. Additional voices include Chris Tergliafera, Craig Lee Thomas, Erica Mendez, Frank Todaro, Lucien Dodge, and Todd Haberkorn.
None of these names carried the franchise previously. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn voiced Kusanagi through the Stand Alone Complex era, and Richard Epcar played Batou across nearly every English adaptation of the property. Their absence is conspicuous. Some viewers have noted online that the German dub reportedly brought back legacy voice actors from the SAC era. This decision stings for English-speaking fans who expected similar treatment.
Yeung voiced Makima in Chainsaw Man, a character whose authority comes entirely from stillness and controlled intent, which makes the casting logic clear enough on paper. Still, early reception has been mixed. Forum discussions flagged lines in the dub where Kusanagi sounds oddly casual, with one widely shared complaint pointing to the word "jerkwads" being used by the Major. That particular choice had some viewers switching back to Japanese audio within minutes.
Subtitles That Don't Match the Audio
The bigger headache might be the subtitles. At the UK preview screening, the subtitles were based on the English dub rather than the Japanese soundtrack, creating glaring mismatches, including "ghost" dialogue reflecting extra dub lines when nobody spoke in the original, and moments where one character spoke. At the same time, viewers read another character's line onscreen. Andrew Osmond, writing for Animation World Network, documented the problem firsthand.
One reviewer noted that "some subtitles zip by pretty quick," calling it an ongoing gripe with anime on Amazon. An Anime News Network critic echoed the sentiment, writing that the show "tries to exposit its information to me with subtitles and on-screen text" so quickly that they double-checked their playback speed.
For a franchise built on dense technical dialogue and layered political intrigue, these are not small problems. Viewers new to the property have an especially steep hill to climb if the text onscreen keeps fighting the audio.
The Amazon Trust Deficit
All of this lands in a context Amazon earned the hard way. Over Thanksgiving weekend 2025, Prime Video quietly uploaded AI-generated beta dubs for several anime titles, including Banana Fish and No Game, No Life Zero. Clips went viral showing how poor the results were, and by early December, Amazon had pulled them following backlash from fans, voice actors, and Japanese licensors.

Voice actor Daman Mills called Amazon's AI dubs "a massive insult to performers." The National Association of Voice Actors branded them "AI slop." That fury has not fully dissipated. Earlier this year, Amazon posted a job listing for a Creative Director focused on dubbing that specifically described a role spearheading "the creative vision for its AI-enabled dubbing platform." The listing was eventually pulled, but it confirmed that the company had not abandoned its AI ambitions for localization.
So when subtitle issues surfaced on The Ghost in the Shell, even relatively standard ones, the reaction was sharper than it might have been elsewhere. Fans are primed to see every quality lapse as evidence of a platform cutting corners.
What the Show Actually Is
Set aside the localization noise, and the production itself tells a different story. This is the first Ghost in the Shell anime not animated by Production I.G., the studio behind every adaptation from Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film through SAC_2045. Based directly on Shirow's original manga, the series marks the first adaptation to faithfully tackle his source material. Shirow's original carried more humor, more technical detail, and a lighter rhythm between action sequences than what audiences typically associate with the franchise.
Mokochan, a storyboard artist and key animator for DAN DA DAN and The Heike Story, is making his directorial debut. Novelist Toh Enjoe, who scripted Godzilla Singular Point, is both writing and overseeing the series scripts. Producer Kōhei Sakita told Anime News Network that original creator Shirow has been involved throughout: "We shared the script and storyboard with Shirow-sensei. He checks up on us but also trusts us with the creative process and acting."
Atsuko Tanaka, the Japanese voice actor most closely associated with Kusanagi, died in August 2024 at age 61. For many viewers, her voice was the Major. That loss gives every new performance of the character, English or Japanese, an unavoidable emotional weight.
What Comes Next
Science SARU's version is already being called 2026's most polarizing anime debut. The show itself has earned praise for its animation and fidelity to Shirow's art style. Whether the English localization can earn comparable goodwill remains a week-by-week question as new episodes arrive on Prime Video each Tuesday.
Amazon has a franchise worth protecting here. After 2025, the margin for error with this audience is essentially zero.
