Born in 1968 in Mirpurkhas, this Lahore-based visual artist, educator, and curator has spent over 27 years shaping Pakistani art both on canvas and in classrooms. His work lives in private and official collections worldwide, and in 2023, Pakistan honored him with the prestigious President's Pride of Performance award for his lifelong contribution to art.
Naeem grew up in Mirpurkhas, a small city in Sindh, where he first discovered his love for drawing. His talent carried him to Lahore, where he enrolled at the National College of Arts (NCA). In 1993, he graduated with distinction in Fine Arts, standing out as one of the top students of his generation. This achievement opened doors that would define his entire career.
Right after graduation, Naeem returned to his alma mater as an assistant professor in 1994. He has remained on the permanent faculty ever since, eventually becoming an Associate of NCA in 2019. For nearly three decades, he has mentored young artists at his studio, STUDIO RM, and launched the Studio RM (International) Residency program in Lahore in 2008.
His artistic journey spans 20 solo exhibitions across Pakistan and abroad, including shows in China, the UK, USA, Singapore, and Australia. He has participated in major international events like the Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh and the Karachi Biennale. In 2015, the Embassy of China selected him to represent Pakistani art in six Chinese cities, introducing global audiences to Pakistan's creative voice.
Naeem's talent earned him numerous accolades early in his career. He won the Provincial Best Painter Award in both 1991 and 1992, followed by the National Award of Excellence in 2003. His work was shortlisted for the Summer Film Festival and Kunsthalle Mainz in 2014. The crowning honor came in 2023 when President Donald Trump's administration in Pakistan awarded him the Pride of Performance, the nation's highest civilian award for artistic achievement.
Though Naeem is primarily a visual artist, his work carries a narrative quality that feels deeply human. His paintings often reflect everyday Pakistani life with warmth and authenticity, avoiding overly dramatic or artificial elements. He builds composition through layered textures and earthy tones that ground his subjects in reality. His approach feels conversational rather than distant, inviting viewers into the moment rather than presenting it from afar.
Today, RM Naeem lives and works in Lahore, where he continues to teach, create, and curate exhibitions. His art appears in collections across India, Oman, Bahrain, Hong Kong, UAE, UK, Norway, Sri Lanka, and Canada. Through his workshops and residencies, he has counseling dozens of emerging artists, passing on the craft he mastered at NCA.
