Pop fandom has a habit of turning three words into a full news cycle. That's exactly what happened this weekend, when a TikTok from Madonna carrying the caption "Thinking about Charli" sent both her fanbase and Charli XCX's into overdrive.
The post, dated September 5 and preserved by the fan site News Of Madonna, tags Charli XCX directly. The caption reads "Thinking about Charli......@Charli XCX 👀". That's it. No song, no date, no further explanation.
By September 6, accounts like Pop Base had picked it up and were circulating it alongside what's been described as a response attributed to Charli XCX. That response has not been independently verified through a primary source, and neither artist has confirmed anything resembling a joint release.
Context matters here, and there's plenty of it. Madonna and Charli XCX have spent much of 2026 orbiting each other in public. Back in May, Charli XCX released Rock Music, the lead single from her album Music, Fashion, Film. She had declared, "I think the dance floor is dead so now we're making rock music."
Madonna, gearing up for her own Confessions II, appeared to answer. She seemingly replied to the lyrics with the caption, "If your Dance floor feels dead / Maybe you're playing the wrong music". Fans immediately framed it as a feud. It wasn't much of one.
By late June, the two were photographed sitting together at the Saint Laurent menswear show during Paris Fashion Week. Footage emerged of Charli and Madonna smoking and chatting with other stars in attendance; everything seemed cool between the two, as clips showed them posing for photos and talking before the show. Charli later spoke about the encounter directly, telling NME she came away from it moved by the experience.
So the September 5 teaser doesn't land out of nowhere. It lands on top of a relationship that's already shifted from public sparring to public warmth, at least publicly.
Still, "thinking about" someone is not the same as announcing a duet. There's no confirmed title. No release date. No label statement from Warner Records, which is handling Confessions II, or from Atlantic, Charli's label. Nothing on either artist's official channels beyond the original TikTok itself.
It's worth remembering both women are mid-album-cycle right now. Confessions II carries features from Kylie Minogue, Stuart Price, Martin Garrix and Stromae, alongside the Sabrina Carpenter collaboration Bring Your Love. Music, Fashion, Film, meanwhile, already came out in July. A late addition, a remix, or a one-off performance are all plausible readings of a caption this vague. So is nothing at all.
For now, the honest answer to what's coming next is simple. Nobody knows yet.
Screenshots will keep circulating. Pop Base and similar accounts will keep amplifying them. But until Madonna or Charli XCX post something with an actual title attached, this remains speculation dressed up as news. That's the pitch, anyway, and it's a good one. Whether it turns into an actual song is a different question entirely.
