It was supposed to stay private. Roughly six months ago, on the red carpet at the 68th Grammy Awards, Coco Jones told PEOPLE she wanted her wedding to be something personal, something quiet.
"So I hope that it can be really intimate, really special."
That is not what happened.
On August 1, 2026, Jones married Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell, nearly one year after the couple announced their engagement in July 2025. Neither has publicly confirmed the ceremony. Fans found out the way they always find out with this couple: a video leaked.
Their first dance, set to Musiq Soulchild's Love, started circulating over the weekend and spread before either said a word.
Former basketball player Troy Payne shared multiple videos from the ceremony. The footage came off a guest's Instagram Story before spreading across X, and from there onto TikTok, where clips have been looping since Saturday night. In the viral first dance footage, Jones is in her veil, moving through a tent draped in cream fabric with florals hanging from the ceiling as guests cheer.
The guest list read like some surreal crossover event. Jaylen Brown, Jalen Brunson, and Bam Adebayo were there. So were Russell Wilson and Ciara, who aren't just friends of the couple: Wilson reportedly connected Mitchell with the planner behind his July 2025 proposal, and Jones has publicly called him and Ciara their mentors.
In one clip, Brown of the Philadelphia 76ers is seen filming Brunson from across the dance floor.
For those less familiar, Jones is a 28-year-old former Disney Channel kid who rebuilt her career from scratch. She broke through as a teen actress in the Disney Channel film Let It Shine and later starred as Hilary Banks in Peacock's Bel-Air.
Her Grammy win for Best R&B Performance for ICU arrived in 2024, and she followed her debut album Why Not More? with a Super Bowl performance and two Grammy nominations this year. Mitchell, meanwhile, is 29 and signed a $273 million contract extension with the Cavaliers this summer, securing his deal through 2031.
Their origin story has its own charm. Mitchell had messaged Jones on Instagram years earlier following a Bel-Air collaboration with his shoe line, but the DM went unseen. They eventually met at a networking event for creatives where phones were banned, forcing an in-person introduction.
Jones was evasive when Shannon Sharpe asked her about the relationship on Club Shay Shay, saying she wanted to protect her family and who she loves.
That instinct toward privacy is exactly what makes the leaked footage sting a little. Jones spent the first half of 2026 telling anyone who asked that the wedding would be for her, not for content. She wanted "the day to belong to her rather than to views, clicks, or sales." And yet the Musiq Soulchild deep cut is now the most-discussed song choice of the weekend, trending across R&B fan communities who are celebrating a pick that skipped the obvious standards.
Fan reactions have been warm. Comments calling them "Spidaman and Spidawoman" and variations of "BLACK LOVE" are everywhere on X and TikTok. The couple has not posted, acknowledged, or denied anything as of Sunday evening.
At last year's Cavaliers media day, Mitchell offered perhaps the best preview of how he sees this partnership. "She's a special human," he said. "And you see it in her work, and to be able to call her my fiancée, my wife, is a blessing. So, I'm grateful."
Now he can drop the fiancée part. Whether the newlyweds address the footage or let the silence do the talking, the 2026-27 NBA season will begin with Mitchell as a married man and Jones gearing up for what fans expect will be a second album cycle. Both careers are at full speed.
The only thing neither of them could control was someone else's camera.
