Early Life and Education
Miyazaki was born on January 5, 1941, in Tokyo, Japan. His father worked in an airplane manufacturing company, which sparked his lifelong fascination with flight and machines. He studied political science and economics at Gakushuin University, graduating in 1963.
Developing a Practice
After university, Miyazaki joined Toei Animation as an in-between artist. He worked his way up and met Isao Takahata, a key collaborator. Together they created several successful series and films. In 1985, they co-founded Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki directed his first feature, The Castle of Cagliostro, in 1979. His breakthrough came with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind in 1984.

Miyazaki's films include My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and The Boy and the Heron.
