Showrunner Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf exit as the broadcaster puts the sci-fi series out to tender

The BBC is no longer going ahead with a Doctor Who Christmas special this year and is now seeking new production partners. Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have officially exited the series as the BBC puts the show out to competitive tender.

Competitive tender is a formal, open process in which the BBC invites independent production companies to pitch for production rights on an existing series. The BBC retains all IP in Doctor Who, with BBC Studios continuing to lead global distribution, licensing, consumer products, and digital experiences on the broadcaster's behalf.

The Christmas special had originally been announced back in October 2025, making today's reversal a sharp change in direction. That announcement came alongside Disney+'s confirmation that it was exiting its Doctor Who co-production deal with the BBC, having served as the worldwide home of the series outside the UK and Ireland.

Davies addressed the news directly on Instagram, and his post came with a notable admission. The now-former showrunner revealed that his earlier promise of a Christmas script that had blown away BBC higher-ups was entirely untrue. In his own words, "GOODBYE from me to Doctor Who but HELLO to a big new future for the show... there won't be a Christmas Special — we only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no one knew what would happen... You'll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you'll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off." Davies also clarified: "For the record: there was no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor."

Davies and Bad Wolf had originally signed up for Doctor Who as part of a major reboot in 2021. Davies first relaunched Doctor Who in 2005, and his second tenure saw the show pair with Disney+ for global reach. At the end of the latest series, which recorded the franchise's lowest-ever viewership numbers, Ncuti Gatwa regenerated into Billie Piper, who played companion Rose Tyler during the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant era.

Doctor Who last aired in May 2025, ending Gatwa's brief two-series run. In that final episode, he regenerated into Piper, though it was never officially confirmed whether she would become the next Doctor.

It had been hoped the 2026 Christmas special could tie up some of those loose ends. Separately, the BBC confirmed today that a Doctor Who animated series is currently in production.

The BBC stated that rather than "bridge the gap with a one-off special," the decision was made to "push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show." The BBC has steadfastly insisted, including in today's statement, that despite off-screen drama and indifferent recent ratings, the Doctor's future is secure.
